Part 15
The darkness was kind. So kind to him. It took away the pain. Took away the hurting that he no longer wanted to feel. It seemed that the darkness took away the voice as well. The voice he heard ever since he began to surrender. It was only the next step to eliminating his being. The more he allowed himself to sink into the dark lake, the more he felt he didn't exist. That's what he wanted. It was so much easier to live in the realm of darkness. Not feeling. Not hurting. Not being. He had no intentions of returning. There was nothing in the real world for him. Suddenly he heard the voice again. Maybe the darkness wasn't as kind as he thought. For this time the voice was different. Softer, more emotional. More convincing. He wasn't sure what was being said, but he knew who the voice belonged to. Quatre. The tone was unmistakable. Quatre was there? Why was he there? Did the darkness decide to have a little fun with him before conquering? "Jackal." It was the first word he fully understood. The tone was so soft. So sad. As if the owner was crying. Quatre was crying? Jackal wanted nothing more than to just sink deeper into the darkness, but that single word seemed to forbid him from doing so. Something in the voice told him to go back. He had to go back. If Quatre was crying, someone was hurting him. Determination set in and he began heading toward the voice. Whoever was hurting Quatre would pay. The closer he came to the voice, the harsher the darkness seemed to pull at him. Wanting him to remain where he was. All the while, Quatre's voice could still be heard. It encouraged him to continue the battle. Begging him to return. Jackal fought as much as he could. This only made him sinker deeper. As he stopped fighting, he began to sink slower. There had to be a way to return. All at once, he burst from the darkness, using every ounce of energy he could muster. It was as if he was trying to pull himself from a large vat of glue. The realm he was trying to leave fought just as hard to keep him as he fought to leave. "Jackal, please don't leave me." He was close enough to hear Quatre's wonderful voice. It only added to his strength. For the first time, the voice stopped and Jackal began to backslide. Before he plunged into the depth of the realm, his hand snagged onto something. Not caring what it was or where it came from, he held tightly to it. The anchor prevented him from falling further. Jackal held onto it, waiting for the voice to continue.
"What's gotten into you Dingo. I'm just checking up on him." Wolf stated calmly, but he was clearly getting annoyed at Dingo trying to keep him out. "The doctors said that he should rest right now." Dingo sputtered. "I'm not going to bother him." Wolf assured as he turned the door knob. "Don't let him fool you." Hyena could be heard slightly. "Blondie's in there." Quatre's heart stopped. It was a set up. Dingo was right. Upon this statement, the door flew open and Quatre was greeted with menacing blue eyes. "What the Hell. . . ." Holding even tighter to Jackal's hand, Quatre awaited Wolf's punishment in silence. Wolf charged toward the Arab, but before the silent intentions were carried out, Hyena stood between them. Wolf glared at his Chinese employee. "What do you think you're doing?" Hyena only stared at him with emotionless coal. Quatre could see Dingo and Coyote standing on the threshold of the room, cautiously observing the entire scene. For an unknown reason, Quatre had a feeling everything would turn out all right. "Hyena, down!" Wolf yelled in a threatening voice. The bartender remained where he stood. "I won't tell you again." The older man appeared surprised that he was being disobeyed. "No." Hyena stated calmly as he crossed his arms. The only way he would move from his spot was by means of physical force. "Hyena. . ." "This is the only way Jackal will wake up and I'll be damned if I allow you to interrupt." His black eyes narrowed at this statement. "Sir, I'm going to have to ask you to leave." Wolf turned to face a nurse stepping into the room. "This is a hospital where very sick people are trying to rest. You're interrupting the rest that is needed, so you must go." Wolf turned back to Hyena. "I will call security if I have to." "This isn't over." Wolf whisper and shot a death stare at Quatre. "Not by a long shot." He treated Hyena to the same. "You'll have to leave sometime." He then turned and followed the nurse out of the room. Hyena could feel Quatre's eyes on him. He hated to do that, but it had to be done. He chanced a look toward the two standing at the door. Dingo's jaw near hit the floor while Coyote seemed unaffected. Dingo slowly walked into the room and lightly pinched Hyena. In return, the offending hand was slapped. "Sorry, I'm just making sure you're real. I can't believe you did that." Dingo explained as he rubbed his sore hand. "I've never seen Wolf so pissed before." "Thank you." Quatre said softly as he stood from his sitting spot on the bed. Hyena turned to face him. A smile spread across the Arab's lips as he extended his hand for a shake. Surely they had to be friends now, if Hyena went through all that. Hyena only stared at the hand a moment before he pushed it away from him. "You have no reason to thank me. I've done nothing for you." His black eyes averted to Jackal. They soften a little as he saw the first sign that the Latin was recovering. Dingo was the second to notice it. "I think someone is missing you Blondie." Dingo nodded toward Jackal. Baffled, Quatre turned to understand what was meant. Jackal's hand was ever so slightly moving about in search of the hand that was holding it only seconds ago. "Quatre." The whisper was barely audible. Overwhelmed with joy, Quatre grasp Jackal's hand tightly in both his. "I'm here Jackal." At the sound of Quatre's voice, Jackal's eyes slowly opened. Hyena silently left the room. Jackal kept his part of the bargain. Now it was his turn to do the same. It tore at his heart that he wasn't the one able enough to wake Jackal, but it didn't matter. All that mattered was that he was waking. He was going to live. And it was all because of some rich blonde kid that he knew for only a little while. "Quatre?" Jackal whispered forcefully. "I'm here Jackal." "You shouldn't be. . .if Wolf. . ." "He's already been here. He knows I'm here." "Why did. . ." "I want to be with you Jackal." Quatre interrupted and rested his cheek against Jackal's chest. "I don't care what happens to me. I have to be with you. I'd rather die than leave you again. I shouldn't have left in the first place." "Quatre, why can't you understand?" "Why can't you?" A small silence ascended as they stared into each other's eyes. "Come with me Jackal. He can't control you if he can't find you." "You can't. He owns me." "How? How can he own you?" Jackal closed his eyes. "You're not property or an inanimate object. You're a human and humans can no longer be owned. The only thing holding you back is yourself. You're afraid, aren't you?" Jackal remained silent as he turned from the blonde. Ignoring the immense pain in his abdomen, he tried to push himself from the hospital bed. He couldn't tell Quatre. He wouldn't. What would the Winner heir think of him? Quatre was right. People could no longer be owner. At least as long as the government acknowledged the fact that the person existed. Jackal didn't exist. He had nothing to prove that he was alive. Just the people who have seen him. But that could easily be explained as a mix up or figment of the imagination. "Jackal, you should be resting." Quatre's words interrupted his thoughts. The statement was ignored as he continued to dress. "Maybe you should listen to him." Dingo added. It was the first time the American spoke since Hyena left. "They won't let you out of here until they feel that you're ready." Quatre pleaded as he stared at the scarred back. "Jackal please. If I'm the reason that you don't want to stay, then I'll leave." He stood up and headed toward the door. "Quatre, it's not you." "Then what? I want to help you, but I can't if you don't tell me what I can do. . .Tell me Jackal. . .Tell me how I can help." Sensing that was their cue to exit, Coyote grabbed his lover's hand and lead him from the room. Dingo tried to resist, but Coyote was too strong. "But it's just getting good." Dingo whined as the door was closed for privacy. "Come on Coyote. Don't you want to know what happens?" Dingo questioned. Coyote wordlessly leaned against the closed door. This served three purposes. It would keep Quatre and Jackal in. Keep Dingo out and prevent him from eavesdropping. "Man, you're no fun anymore." Dingo leaned against the wall next to the barricade. He crossed his arms and slid to a sitting position. From there, he continued to pout. Coyote inwardly smiled. He loved how the American's bottom lip stuck out while pouting. The tone of voice he used only proved that he was used to the act. If anyone else tried, it would have came out pathetic and annoying. Dingo, however, pulled it off as sexy. Even the nurses walking in the hall had to stop and glance. In return, Coyote shot each of them a warning glare. Suddenly, Coyote's pager sounded. Out of habit, he pulled out the beeper and checked the code. His colbat eyes widen in surprise. Noting the reaction, Dingo stood up and looked over the Japanese shoulder. It was the number to the Wolf Pack, followed by Hyena's code and then 911. Leaving the pager in Dingo's hand, Coyote headed toward the floor's main desk. Three young nurses were talking loudly about something that had happened in one of the elevators earlier that afternoon. Dingo grinned upon approaching. The leader of the gossip stopped as Coyote stood in front of her. She instantly turned beat red as she realized who he was. "I need to use your phone." Coyote said quickly. "I'm sorry, this isn't a visitor phone. There are some pay phones on the main floor." She turned slightly and proceed to give directions to the elevators. Coyote was not amused as he heard the other two nurses laugh. "I need to use the phone now!" He narrowed his colbat eyes at her, threatening a fate worst than death if she said 'no' again. The laughter ended instantly as the phone was placed on the counter for him. Neither her or her two friends spoke as they watched him dial a number. "Let that be a lesson." Dingo grinned. "Don't mess with angry coyotes." He turned his attention to his partner. He loved how his lover was so forceful when it came to something he wanted. The phone rang only once before Hyena answered. Coyote glared at the nurses who were still watching him. Suddenly each of them busied themselves with something to distract them from the phone call. "What's wrong?" Coyote asked sternly. Dingo latched onto the strong arm and placed his face close to Coyote's in hopes of hearing better. The voice on the other end was low, but as Dingo strained to listen, heard every word said. "Coyote, I need you to do me a favor." Hyena stated calmly. A little too calmly for someone who entered 911 on a page. None of the wolf members ever used 911, no matter how urgent it was. For Hyena to use it meant something pretty drastic must have happened. "I need you to tell Jackal that I fulfilled my part of the bargain." "What?!" Dingo yelled. "What is that supposed to mean?" "Just tell him, because I don't think I'll have the chance to." "What bargain are you talking about?" Coyote asked as a bad feeling washed over him. "Just tell Jackal, please. . .and tell him I'm sorry and that I love him. . ." This was followed by a click. "Hyena?" Coyote called, but all he got was a dial tone. "What's he talking about Coyote?" Dingo wondered as Coyote replaced the receiver. The question remained unanswered as the two headed to Jackal's room. Without warning, Coyote threw open the door. Both Quatre and Jackal appeared surprised. Judging from the tears in Quatre's eyes, Coyote guessed that the Arab didn't like what he was hearing, if he was hearing anything at all. "Jackal, what kind of deal did you have with Hyena?" Coyote cut straight to the chase. "We didn't." "Then what was he talking about?" Dingo interrupted. "He just paged Coyote with 911. All he said was that he's taking care of his side of the bargain. He wanted Coyote to tell you because he might not get a chance." "Anything else?" "Just that he's sorry and he loves you." Coyote finished. "Where was he?" "At the Pack." "Coyote, will you take me there?" "Jackal, what's going on?" Dingo wondered as Coyote nodded. He watched in awe as the two walked out of the room. "This is nuts." He turned to Quatre and grabbed the blonde's wrist. "You better come too. You'll be safer inside the pack." Quatre only nodded, not having any other choice. As the four of them headed toward the elevator, several nurses and doctors tried to convince them that Jackal wasn't well enough to leave. They wanted him to stay at least one more night before releasing him. With or without dispatch papers, Jackal planned on going, and with Coyote at his side no one would try to physically stop him. He wasn't sure what Hyena was talking about, but it didn't sound good. The ride from the hospital to the bar would usually take 15 min. However, there was a accident on the freeway, making the trip twice as long. Finally the Wolf Pack came into view. A large crowd had swarmed the parking lot. It circled three police squad cars, a ambulance, and four news vans. "What the Hell is happening here?" Dingo gave voice to everyone's question. Without thinking, Jackal sprang from the back seat of the car before Coyote could park. He wasn't sure why, but he felt compelled to go into the bar. He knew something wasn't right. He pushed through the crowd. As he neared the front of the mass, he could see Billie standing by one of the cop cars. She was talking rapidly to a middle aged officer. Surprisingly enough, she was crying. "Whoa there buddy." Jackal felt someone push him back. He blinked and stared at the heavyset officer. "You can't cross the police tape." He pointed at the yellow band a few inches from Jackal's waist. "But we work here." Dingo complained as he stood behind Jackal. The cop's eyebrow raised in skeptical disbelief. "It's true. You can even ask her." Dingo pointed at Billie and called her name. As she turned toward them, Jackal's eyes were averted toward the entrance to the bar. Hyena stepped into the crisp afternoon air. His head was held high in pride. He seemed oblivious to the flashing cameras around him. He was escorted by two officers. They walked on either side of him. His hands were cuffed behind him and he seemed to be cooperating with the law enforcers. With a burst of energy, Jackal tore pass the police tape toward the prisoner. "Hyena." Upon hearing his name, Hyena looked toward the source. "Jackal, you should be resting." "What is this?" Before Jackal could continue, the same officer that stopped him before, seized his waist and began tugging him away from the Chinese criminal. "I fulfilled my part of the bargain Jackal." Hyena explained as he stopped next to the squad car. "What bargain?" Jackal pulled from the restraining officer. "You woke from your coma. I set you free." The back door of the car was opened and the police officer gave Hyena a chance to enter on his own. "This is the only way I could think of." The next thing anyone knew, Hyena had captured the Latin's lips in a farewell kiss. Not fully understanding why, Jackal returned the gesture. He felt that he at least owed his savior the one final pleasure. It would have lasted longer, but they were pulled apart by cops. Hyena smiled despite the tears welling in his black eyes. "You bastard!" This statement was followed by a loud smack. Billie was standing by Hyena. The bronze cheek immediately turned red from the harsh contact. "How could you do this?" She yelled as she was pulled from him the same as Jackal had been. "After everything my brother did for you. You fucking bastard! I hope you go straight to Hell!" She screamed, tears streaming from her green eyes. Jackal watched still confused as Hyena was helped into the squad car. Once the door was closed, the restraining arm released his waist. Seizing the moment, Jackal ran to the car. The back window was barely cracked. "I don't understand why you did this. You only had a few more months." "I did it because I love you Jackal. I always have. True, I would have left the pack as soon as I graduated, but you would still be stuck here. Wolf would never have let you leave. Not even to be with me. I can continue my studies at the prison library." "You shouldn't have done this." "You deserve to be happy Jackal. I deserve this. I committed a crime and justice must be served." "But. . ." "It's my way of repenting for what I have done to you. I now realize that I was only helping Wolf and Billie kill you slowly. I'm just glad I opened my eyes before I ended up murdering someone I care for." He looked pass the Latin to the other wolf members. Quatre was standing between Dingo and Coyote. "He really cares for you Jackal. Let him. And be happy. I have no regrets for what I've done. If I had to, I would do it all over again. I feel justice has been served to him. As it will be served to me. And hopefully, it will be to you. Tell Quatre that if he doesn't treat you better than I would have, he'll be next." "Hyena. . ." The car sputtered to life. "Don't worry about me. Focus on you for once. Step back so that they can go." Jackal numbly obeyed. He watched the car until he could no longer see it. "We'll get him a great lawyer. No one in their right mind could convict him." Quatre stated softly as Jackal looked down at him. The waves crashed against the ocean shore. The sound they made were soothing to a heavy heart and a restless mind. A soft summer breeze danced through the night every now and then. The stars were one by one revealing themselves. As they did, they shone brightly for attention. But they were ignored as Jackal leaned on the banister of the balcony. His mind was clouded with thoughts of everything that had happened recently. Wolf was dead. Though a large crowd had showed for the funeral, the wolf members only watched from a distant hill. Jackal had shown up to watch him be buried. He wasn't sure why he felt that he had too. Maybe it was because Wolf wasn't the only thing being put to rest that day. In a way, part of Jackal went with him. As suspected, Billie inherited the bar. Which gave both of the remaining bartenders a reason for quitting. Once she found that out, she sold the bar and moved to the other side of the Colony with Reco. Dingo and Coyote had shown up only to support their Latin friend during Wolf's funeral and at the courthouse. They seemed to have disappeared shortly after Hyena's conviction. Jackal wasn't sure where they went, but he was willing to bet that they were together. He never thought it possible, but he missed hearing Dingo's nonstop chatter. The American always kept things lively. Coyote had been the closet thing to a brother for him. He didn't really realize it until now. Hyena refused to accept Quatre's offer of a lawyer. Not because he hated the Arab, but because he truly felt that justice shouldn't be avoided. Not for him or anyone else. He swore that at his hearing, he would plead 'guilty' to the courts. It's the only thing his heart and mind would allow. For as far back as Jackal had known him, he has had a strong sense of justice. Which was why he would have made a great lawyer. Presently, Quatre stepped onto the balcony. He gently wrapped his arms around Jackal's waist and rested his cheek against the back of his shoulder. They had spent every moment they possibly could together since Jackal left the hospital. Somehow being with the Arab set his mind at ease. At the same time, it filled him with guilt. The only reason he was here, was because of the sacrifice that Hyena had made for him. "Jackal. . ." Quatre softly murmured and kissed his shoulder. "Hyena wanted you to be happy. Would it be fair if he made such a decision to only find you feeling guilty? He knew the full extent of his actions. He chose the path on his own free will." "It doesn't seem fair that he should be locked up, while I'm out here. . ." "Hyena told me something the last time I talked to him. He said that justice has a funny way of coming about. Some people face it after committing a crime. Others somehow flee from it. Then there's a few that are barred with it, even though they are innocent." Quatre pulled from him and stood to his left. Moving Jackal's arm, he slid in between his lover and the banister and their eyes met. "But sooner or later justice would be fulfilled. Only then could the sentence of repent began. And then followed by a second chance. At first I didn't understand what he meant. But I continued to think about it, and now I do. Hyena felt that he committed two crimes. Attempted murder on you and first degree toward Wolf. For killing Wolf he wanted to serve his time in a physical prison. While his act of attempted murder was a lot worst for him. Therefore a harsher sentence was needed. He felt that by taking Wolf's life was his sentence of deplore toward his first crime. You're the innocent he was talking about. You've already served your time for a crime you didn't commit. Now, for you, it's time for a second chance. Maybe deep down, that's why you went to Wolf's funeral. It was your way of saying good-bye to your inmate." Jackal stared at Quatre a moment. He wasn't sure what to say after that. Now that he thought about it, what was just said made perfect sense. With better understanding, he felt lighter about the subject. Sensing this, Quatre slightly tilted his face up and kissed Jackal warmly. Jackal returned his kiss deeply as he pulled the blonde closer to him. He would be happy. After everything Hyena had done, he would make the sentence complete.
